Heavy Metal Poisoning - Is that why you are sick?

Heavy metal toxicity is characterized by a group of symptoms that occur when  heavy metals build up, and can not be properly cleared from the body. Often, the symptoms vague and as such, get frequently misdiagnosed as incurable chronic diseases or syndromes. The more common heavy metals that we are exposed to are aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.

Heavy metals can be found everywhere and are  difficult to avoid. Most people’s immune system can eliminate some heavy metals, however some people cannot pass them with efficiency  and they accumulate. New research also shows that at least some of those who can’t eliminate heavy metals with efficiency seem to be genetically susceptible to this condition.

When a lot of heavy metals have accumulated, they have a synergistic effect There was a study performed on rats that found that the death rate of rats exposed to small doses of either mercury or aluminum was only one in a hundred. When the rats were exposed to both mercury and aluminum concurrently every single animal died, yielding a 100% mortality rate.

The following are some of the symptoms of heavy metal toxicity:

    * Chronic pain in the muscles, tendons or tissues

    * Chronic malaise or a generally experiencing discomfort, fatigue, and illness 

    * A state of confusion or forgetfulness often characterized as "Brain Fog".  

     * Diarrhea, constipation, bloating, flatulence, indigestion or heartburn   

    * Food sensitivities

    * Changes in vision

    * Chronic yeast (candida) or other infections

    * Vertigo

    * Frequent headaches

    * Psychiatric symptoms such as depression or anxiety

    * Burning in hands or feet, numbness, tingling in extremities or face and neck

    *Heart disease including heart attack

    *Chronic inflammation

 Heavy metal toxicity is often misdiagnosed  as "chronic fatigue syndrome", autism,  chronic depression, multiple sclerosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses or diseases.

Heavy Metals Lurking in Everyday Life

Many people are unaware of the incredible number of every day items that increase our exposure to heavy metals. The following is just a sampling of how your exposure can build up.

 

Arsenic

1. Pressure treated lumber - think back yard decks and playground equipment

Aluminum

1. Pots and pans
2. Antiperspirants
3. Pop and juice cans, soup etc
4. Antacids
5. Baking powder

Lead

1. Paint
2. Pipes, plumbing
3. City water
4. Ceramic dishes etc
5. Stained glass window materials

Cadmium

1. Batteries
2. Tobacco smoke
3. High fat diet increases cadmium build up in body

Mercury

1. Factory exhaust
2. Dental Fillings
3. Fish- especially the fatty fishes like salmon, mackerel and tuna, and shellfish
4. Vaccines containing thimerosal
5. Energy saver light bulbs (the ones that look like a coil)

Everyone has a certain amount of heavy metal exposure, and build up over their life time. If you suspect that heavy metal toxicity is the cause of your symptoms, you can have testing with your doctor, or a naturopath.
